20years working in paid search, SEO, social and analytics

Proof

Twenty years, and where they went.

Most of my career was spent on other people’s brands. Aviva, RAC, Betfair, Elsevier, Ayima and Gaming Realms: big budgets, bigger teams, and the sort of scrutiny that teaches you quickly which parts of search actually move revenue.

A local plumber and a national insurer need much the same diagnosis. Only the budget changes. So when I started SMB SEO the method came with me, and the account layer stayed behind.

You won’t find invented percentages on this page. I would rather tell you what I’d do about your site than what I once did to somebody else’s.

How it works

Four steps, and no black boxes.

Every site turns up in a different state, so the order shifts about. The shape doesn’t.

  1. Look at what’s actually there

The free audit comes first. Technical health, the pages Google can’t reach or can’t tell apart, where you rank today, and who is beating you locally. You get it in writing whether or not you hire me.

  2. Work out what moves first

Then we settle how many hours a month the site genuinely needs, and what those hours buy. Recommendations you can’t afford to act on are just homework.

  3. Do the work

Technical fixes, pages worth reading, local search including Google Maps, links earned rather than bought. I do it myself. That is the whole reason the client list stays short.

  4. Say what changed, in plain words

Reports you can read without a translator, in the words you already use for your own business. If something isn’t working you will hear it from me first.

Straight answers

What it costs, and how long it takes.

The money

I won’t put a price list here, because I would be making it up. Every quote follows a look at the site.

The ranges are public though. Most UK small businesses pay between £500 and £2,000 a month, and a single-location business usually sits in the lower half of that. Under about £300 a month nobody can buy meaningful senior time. There is a full breakdown in my guide to what SEO really costs in the UK.

The clock

Six to nine months before the revenue clearly covers the fee. That is the honest answer for most local businesses.

Movement shows sooner. Rankings and impressions usually shift inside the first couple of months when something technical was holding the site back, and a site with existing authority can get there inside three. Anyone promising page one in four weeks is describing paid ads.

Questions

What people ask before they hire me.

How much does SEO cost in Norwich?

For a single-location business, a sensible monthly budget usually lands between £500 and £1,500. It should be built from the hours the work genuinely needs rather than picked off a package tier. Under about £300 a month you are buying a report and little else. The full ranges are in my piece on how much SEO costs in the UK.

How long does SEO take to work?

Six to nine months before the revenue clearly covers the fee, for most local businesses. Rankings and impressions should move well before that, often inside two months where something technical was holding the site back. Sites with existing authority get there faster. Nobody honest promises four weeks.

Is an SEO consultant better than an agency?

It depends on your budget and how many disciplines you need at once. Agencies bring capacity and they cover holidays, which matters. You also fund an account layer that never touches your site. Below roughly £1,500 a month you get the thinnest slice of one. I have set out the trade-offs in consultant, freelancer or agency.

What is included in the work?

Technical audits, keyword research, on-page optimisation, content planning, local search including Google Maps, and link building. Paid media, analytics, websites and hosting sit alongside it when a business needs them. Nothing is subcontracted to a team you have never met, because there isn’t one.

Do you only work with businesses in Norwich?

No. Clients in the city and around Norfolk can sit down face to face, and plenty of them do. Everything else runs remotely, for small businesses across East Anglia and the rest of the UK. Google doesn’t care where the consultant sits, though local knowledge helps when your competition is on the next street.

Do I have to sign a long contract?

No twelve-month tie-in. A month’s notice is normal and fair, and that is how I work. Contracts with no break clause protect somebody’s cash flow rather than your rankings. If the work stops earning its keep, you should be able to walk away without involving a solicitor.

Can you guarantee number one on Google?

No, and neither can anyone else, because nobody controls the index. What I will promise is that you know what is being done, why it was chosen, and what it changed. Guaranteed rankings, fixed link counts and domain-authority targets are sales devices rather than results.

What does the free audit include?

A written view of where the site stands. What is technically broken, which pages compete with each other, the terms you could realistically win, and what I would do first. It comes with the initial consultation, and it is yours to keep whether or not you hire me.

Where I am

Home is Glebe Road, and that helps.

The address is Glebe Road, Norwich, NR2 3JQ. If you would rather talk something through in person than trade emails about it, that is easy to arrange, and Norfolk businesses tend to take it up.

Plenty of the work happens remotely regardless, for small businesses across East Anglia and the rest of the UK. Local knowledge simply helps when the firm you are trying to outrank is two streets away rather than two counties.
